Instrument Rating
Most airline companies operate aircraft in operations that require the Instrument Rating. This rating enables pilots to fly aircraft in poor weather conditions where instrument reference is required. GFT offers a Recurrent Instrument Training Program for those pilots that require renewal or have let their instrument rating lapse. A Professional Training Program is available for initial candidates, as well as an accelerated program designed for a quicker pace. This Rating is also part of the ICPL.
Prerequisites
Minimum Age: 17 years old
Aviation Medical: Category 3 or higher
Aviation Licence: Private Pilot Licence or higher
Course Contents and Requirements
The most common type of instrument rating acquired is a Group 1 Instrument Rating, which simply means the flight test is conducted on a multi-engine aircraft and the candidate can fly a multi-engine aircraft. The graduate can then fly a multi-engine aircraft in instrument conditions. There are 3 different Instrument Training Programs, in addition to the ICPL, designed to meet the specific needs of each candidate. Each course utilizes the Cessna 172, PA44-180 Piper Seminole, and our PFC MFD Full Cockpit Flight Simulator.
Dual Flight Time: 10 hrs
Flight Simulator : 6.0 hrs
Solo Flight Time 1.6 hrs
Preparatory Ground Instruction: 6.0 hrs (one-on-one instruction)
Ground School: Not included
Flight Test: Completed by qualified TC Approved Examiner
Written Examinations: Transport Canada Written Test (if expired more than 2 years)
The Recurrency Program
The Recurrency Program is designed to prepare candidates for the Instrument Flight Test to renew the Instrument Rating that has lapsed.
The Accelerated Program
The Accelerated Program is designed for the candidate with some previous flight experience beyond initial training. The following schedule assumes that the candidate has already completed and passed the Transport Canada Instrument Written Test, which is strongly recommended. The times listed may vary according to skill level and instrument flight time the candidate already has acquired.
Dual Flight Time: 16 hrs
Flight Simulator : 11.5 hrs
Solo Flight Time 1.6 hrs
Preparatory Ground Instruction: 10.0 hrs (one-on-one instruction)
Ground School: Not included
Flight Test: Completed by qualified GFT Examiner
Written Examinations: Transport Canada Written Test (should be completed prior to beginning)
The Professional Program
The Professional Program is designed for candidates still in training for the Commercial Pilot Licence or have no flight experience outside of initial training. It brings the candidate above Transport Canada minimum requirements and includes a Ground School to prepare the candidate for the Transport Canada Written Test.
Dual Flight Time: 20 hrs
Flight Simulator : 20 hrs
Solo Flight Time 1.6 hrs
Preparatory Ground Instruction: 12.0 hrs (one-on-one instruction)
Ground School: 60 hrs
Flight Test: Completed by qualified GFT Examiner
Written Examinations: Transport Canada Written Test
A candidate may also complete a single-engine Instrument Rating as well. Contact GFT for more information and costs.
Course Schedule
The following schedule assumes suitable weather, a full time schedule and consistent performance of skill. We recommend candidates begin training January, May or September, but anyone who wishes may begin training for the instrument rating at any time.
Recurrent: 1-2 weeks
Accelerated: 2-3 weeks
Professional: 6-8 weeks
Upon Completion
Graduates now qualify for many career opportunities. GFT plays an active role in finding or offering employment opportunities for successful graduates.
